Hiroshima and Nagasaki rallies - a chilling reminder

Hiroshima Day events - August 6-9, 2009

Tuesday, August 4, 2009
August 6 and 9 are the 64th anniversaries of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Memorial events in Melbourne include a morning vigil, street rally and peace concert. These serve not only to remember the victims but to highlight the danger posed to humanity by the worst weapons of terror.

The anniversaries are a chilling reminder that the attacks that indiscriminately killed more than 200,000 people and left tens of thousands severely injured and traumatised were small by today's standards.

Today's nuclear weapons are hundreds of times more powerful. The 26,000 nuclear warheads stockpiled by the eight nuclear powers have the capacity to destroy all life on earth.

Just one missile can deliver independently targeted warheads with destructive power hundreds of times greater than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Demand a future free of nuclear weapons.

Who will keep the bastards honest now?

With no Australian Democrats in the senate who will strive to keep the government transparent and accountable? Who will demand legislation that protects independence and liberty? And who will stand up for the underprivileged and disenfranchised?

We will. With your help there's much we can do. We can still influence government via petitions and submissions, public forums and rallies. But until we get the Australian Democrats back into parliament our strength lies in numbers.
